The initiative

Australia and West Africa Commercial Opportunity Discovery

Capital Primitive is undertaking an Australia and West Africa Commercial Opportunity Discovery, commencing in Ghana, focused on commercially consequential opportunities involving government, large enterprise and specialist capability across both markets.

We are investigating where Australian and West African technology, operational capability, data, knowledge and market access can be combined to address important enterprise and public sector priorities.

The work begins with the problem and the pressure to act, not a predetermined product, supplier or sector.

Why Ghana

A strong starting point for wider opportunity.

Ghana provides a strong starting point for examining wider West African opportunities.

It combines an established business and institutional environment with growing activity across technology, data, digital services, mining, financial services and public infrastructure.

The discovery begins in Ghana but considers opportunities that may extend into wider West Africa, Australia and international markets.

Three opportunity directions

We are testing movement in both directions.

Choose a direction to explore the question behind it.

Choose an opportunity direction

Australia → West Africa

Bring capability to a consequential problem.

What important Ghanaian and regional problems could proven Australian technology, expertise or commercial capability help solve through appropriate local partnerships?

The discovery question

What is needed locally, and who can help deliver it?

West Africa → Australia

See value through a different market.

What do Ghanaian and West African organisations know, own, control, generate or do that Australian businesses would value?

The discovery question

What could an Australian buyer value differently?

Together → Regional markets

Create something neither could deliver alone.

What complementary Australian and West African capabilities could be combined, proven in Ghana and expanded across the region?

The discovery question

What becomes possible when the right capabilities meet?

The problem ecosystem

The primitive may sit across a system.

In a conventional engagement, the unit of analysis is one business. In this initiative, the unit may be a consequential problem surrounded by government, enterprise, local capability, external expertise, funders, regulators and delivery partners.

Capital Primitive applies the same method at a larger scale: identify what already exists, isolate what is missing and assemble only the capability the problem requires.

01Consequential Ghanaian problem
02AExisting Ghanaian capability
02BMissing capability matched with Australian expertise and technology
03Combined solutionDesigned around the problem, buyer and operating conditions
  1. 04Validated implementation
  2. 05Local ownership and knowledge transfer
  3. 06Repeatable Ghanaian capability
  4. 07Adaptation across West Africa

Commercial Capability Engine

A coordinated system of organisations, expertise, technology, governance, funding and local delivery capability built around a consequential problem.

Institutional value

The priority receives a credible, measurable response.

Commercial value

Participating organisations gain a sustainable path to revenue.

Economic capability

Ghanaian teams can operate, improve and commercialise the capability without indefinite external dependence.

The methodology is repeatable. The solution must be adapted and earned in each market.

What the discovery will examine

Capability, pressure, participation and proof.

  • Technology and intellectual property
  • Specialist and operational capability
  • Data and AI enabled opportunities
  • Physical execution and verification networks
  • Market access and distribution
  • Enterprise and government requirements
  • Commercial positioning
  • Local participation and capability development
  • Governance, compliance and data rights
  • Partnership and investment models
  • Routes to market
  • Evidence required before investment

How Capital Primitive approaches it

We do not begin with a product looking for a market.

We begin beneath the existing business model, examining what organisations actually know, own, control, generate, reach and can credibly do.

We then determine where that capability becomes commercially valuable, identify the buyer and pressure to act, and assemble the path to revenue.

The method is being used to discover opportunities between markets, not merely described as a consulting framework.

What remains open

The direction will be earned through discovery.

The discovery does not assume that the opportunity must move in one direction or belong to one sector.

  • Which sectors contain the strongest opportunities
  • Whether the primary value is technology, data, knowledge, access or delivery
  • Whether the buyer is Australian, Ghanaian or regional
  • Whether existing capability can be repackaged
  • Whether new capability must be built
  • Which partners and specialists are required
  • What should be tested, funded, redirected or stopped

Who we welcome discussions with

Institutions positioned near consequential problems and credible capability.

  • Government and trade organisations
  • Regulators and public sector agencies
  • Large Ghanaian, Australian and multinational enterprises
  • Institutional investors and programme sponsors
  • Technology and specialist capability providers relevant to an identified opportunity
  • Universities, industry bodies and research organisations

Contribute to the discovery

Where could capability between Australia and West Africa create real commercial value?

If your organisation is responsible for an important enterprise or public sector priority, controls relevant capability or can contribute institutional knowledge, investment or specialist expertise, we would value the conversation. The first discussion is exploratory.
